Montessori philosophy encourages teaching phonetic sounds in a very unique structured method which helps children be comfortable when they start blending the sounds together to make words.
Some key points about the way Montessori method introduces “phonetic sounds“:
Letter sounds and not names of the letters are taught first.
Letters are not introduced in an alphabetical order, but rather based on how frequently they occur in common words.
Letters are introduced in an order which would help children make the most “short vowel” words as they first begin blending sounds and reading.
Lowercase letters are introduced while teaching their phonetic sounds, as almost 90% of our reading is in in lowercase.
How can we help children learn the letter sounds and master them ?
Transition from concrete hands -on to abstract activities while introducing letters sounds, just like it is done with the Montessori lessons.
Provide lots of opportunities for writing letters and practicing their sounds.
Think of different medium for the children to practice writing the letters like corn flour, sand, paint etc.
Start with miniature objects that children would be familiar with, encourage them to practice it well first before transitioning to picture cards or words.
Use objects that start with that particular letter sound to write the letter while reinforcing the letters sounds. For example, make a ‘b’ with buttons and reinforce the ‘b’ sound.
Encourage use of fingers on different tactile letter cards to help child internalize the sounds.
